BANGKOK, Feb 16 (Bernama) – Thailand’s Prime Minister Shretha Thavisin affirmed that the implementation of the digital wallet scheme will remain transparent, free from corruption and fraud in the best interests of the country and its people.
Government spokesperson Chai Watcharonke said Shretta emphasized that the digital wallet scheme is the government’s policy to revive the state’s economy and lay the foundation for the country’s digital economy.
“The Prime Minister confirmed that the scheme will be implemented as per the provisions laid down in the Constitution and relevant laws.
“The government will perform its duty with honesty, transparency and accountability regarding the implementation of the scheme. It will also exercise prudence in carrying out related activities and maintain strict financial discipline in the best interest of the country and its people,” he said in a statement today.
Sreetha chaired the meeting of the Digital Wallet Policy Committee at Government House on Friday.
The digital wallet scheme will see 50 million Thai people aged 16 and above distributed 10,000 baht (100 baht = RM13.24) to purchase food, drinks and consumer goods. This was the election campaign policy of the ruling Pheu Thai Party in last year’s election.
The plan has an estimated budget of 500 billion baht.
Last month, Sreetha had said that the handout scheme would start by May.
The handout plan has drawn criticism that it could be fiscally irresponsible and lead to inflation.
